We are pleased to introduce a half-day event for eighth grade students and their parents. The event is “Movin’ On Up,” a day to discuss the transition the students will be making from middle school to high school. The event will take place May 6th, 2008. The focus will be on the risky behaviors that are often associated with the transition to high school and to help students recognize and discuss the implications of those risks.

A letter to parents from Dr. Powers-Richard and Mr. Papierski

Today Park Junior High, in LaGrange District 102, experienced a lockdown between 11:30 – 1:00 PM because of a graffiti threat found in a student washroom. The graffiti stated a threatening situation would occur on May 2. The lockdown was put into effect to secure the school and allow local police to conduct an investigation. The investigation turned up no threatening situation and the police declared Park to be safe, allowing for classes to resume.

Student/staff safety is our District’s top priority. In light of what has been happening in the districts in our area, we believe it is good to remind everyone of our emphasis on safety once again. We continually engage in safety training, crisis management, and discussions about safety precautions and procedures throughout the year with both students and faculty.

We believe in being proactive about safety, so please communicate with your children the seriousness and long term consequences related to threatening graffiti, whether intended or not.

While school code allows the district to examine each situation on a case- by- case basis, District 106 will take no risks with the safety of your children, and will consider such threats serious school and legal acts of potential violence to many. We will treat such threats with the utmost seriousness.

If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please contact Dr. Powers-Richard or Mr. Papierski.
