Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year.

Let’s get this year started! It is time to not only start thinking about school, it is time to get ready for school! Start getting your kids up at 7:00am, encourage him/her to make the bed, take a shower, and eat a healthy breakfast! This will help make August 22, an enjoyable day.

First Day of School 
The first official day of school is Wednesday, August 22. This is a full day for all middle school students (8:20am - 3:15pm). Please make sure to provide your child with a lunch if you don’t order a hot lunch for your child.

 Daily Schedule/Lunch

Students enter the building at 8:20am, homeroom starts at 8:27am, and the final bell is at 3:15pm.  Classes are 41 minutes, however, Language Arts is 82 minutes. Lunch times have changed a bit;

5th – 11:35             6th – 11:00                   7th – 12:30                   8th – 11:45

 Sports Physicals

Students cannot participate in after-school activities without an up-to-date physical. Tryouts for girls' basketball, boys' softball, and cross country will take place the first week of school.

5th Grade Students

The first day of school will give students a chance to walk through their new schedules, practice their lock combinations, meet their teachers, and begin their middle school journey!

 

Thursday, August 23, 7:00pm: Fifth Grade Parent Orientation / Laptop Bootcamp

A.   It is mandatory for all fifth grade parents to attend this important evening. We will discuss middle school expectations, schedules and options, how we support our 5th grade students, outdoor education, and answer all of your questions.

B.    Because your child will have the opportunity to bring his/her laptop home this year, we need to discuss ways we can support each other to ensure the safety of our students. This evening will give you numerous ideas and strategies to help your child safely use his/her laptop, navigate the internet, and how we can work together to ensure our students are maximizing the benefits of our one-to-one laptop program.

C.    We will have a guest from The National Alliance of Mental Illness (N.A.M.I.) talk about the growing number of students dealing with school anxiety and what we can do to help.

 New to the District? 
It is mandatory that all new parents to the district attend the Laptop Bootcamp meeting on Thursday, August 23, at 7:00pm in the middle school lunchroom.

 Communication / Schoology

We will use Schoology as our main source of communication; however, we will continue to use email for emergency type of information. It is very important to become familiar with Schoology. Schoology gives us one place to find things, participate in discussions, and to stay up to date on what is happening in the middle school. The Middle School Parents’ access code is 7KWDG-F8XSR.  For complete directions on how to join a Schoology group, please see the Schoology Info page on our website under the Student Info Tab.

 Also, make sure to join your child’s grade specific Parent Course. Team leaders will send the specific access codes the first week of school. This will give you access to your child’s grade level information and the opportunity to communicate with the team.

 If you request paper copies of communication, please know that these are almost always sent after the electronic communication has taken place. Please be sure to add/update your email and setup your Schoology account as soon as possible.

 Student Handbook

Please make sure to review the student handbook, it can be found on the district website, under the Our Schools tab. You will be asked to check a box when you register your child for school that indicates you are familiar with the content of the 2018 - 2019 Student Handbook.

 P.E. Uniforms 
If you did not purchase uniforms during registration, you can still visit our online store from now until August 13th. Visit KTforms.com and use the code 
hmsstore2.  All items will be shipped to the school and be in your child’s homeroom on the first day of school.

 School Visits
We look forward to seeing you as a guest and volunteer in the building throughout the school year. We want to remain as transparent and accessible as possible while also establishing and enforcing effective safety and security procedures. All visitors to the school during regular school hours must sign in and out through the office and will be issued a visitor badge and lanyard. The badge and lanyard will serve as an indication that the visitor has completed the sign-in procedure and that their presence in the building is accounted for. All regular volunteers are asked to complete the Volunteer Information Form and submit it to the middle school office prior to volunteering during school hours. The form will be accessible through the district website and in each office.

 *Attendance*

I want to give everyone a heads up regarding attendance for the 2018 - 2019 school year. Students are two times more likely to succeed in academics when they consistently attend school. Please make sure your child attends school when possible because you never know when he/she will have to miss due to an illness, injury, death in the family, medical procedure, etc.

This year absences will be determined to be excused or unexcused (Illinois State Board of Education). Excused absences include: illness, observance of a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, family emergency, situations beyond the control of the student, circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent/guardian for the student’s safety or health, attending a military honors funeral, or other reason as approved by the building principal.

All other absences are considered unexcused.  Pre-arranged excused absences must be approved by the building principal. The school may require documentation explaining the reason for the student’s absence.

In the event of any absence, the student’s parent/guardian is required to call the school at (708-485-3636) before 8:00 a.m. to explain the reason for the absence. If a call has not been made to the school by 10:00 a.m. on the day of a student’s absence, a school official will call the home to inquire why the student is not at school.  If the parent/guardian cannot be contacted, the student will be required to submit a signed note from the parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence.  Failure to do so shall result in an unexcused absence. Upon request of the parent/guardian, the reason for an absence will be kept confidential.

Truancy
Student attendance is critical to the learning process. Truancy is therefore a serious issue and will be dealt with in a serious manner.

Students who miss 5% or more of the prior 180 regular school days without valid cause (a recognized excuse) are considered chronic truants. Students who are chronic truants will be offered support services and resources aimed at correcting the truancy issue.
