Shrek Jr.

A big congratulations to the Cast and Production Crew of Shrek Jr. It was truly a team effort to create such a wonderful production. We would also like to recognize the students who assisted behind the scenes as a part of make-up, costume/props, and set design crews. This show wouldn't have been able to go on without all of your help!

LT Solo & Ensemble

On Tuesday, March 5th LT hosted their annual Solo & Ensemble. Students from Highlands were invited to learn a solo or ensemble piece on their own, perform it for a judge, and receive feedback on their performance. This year, choir students Julianne Olson and Maeve Watson participated. Julianne sang The Girl I Mean to Be from The Secret Garden and Maeve sang Ten Minutes Ago from Cinderella.

Math Olympiad at Gurrie

The Math Team made an impressive showing at Gurrie this weekend in the Math Olympiad.

Highland’s Hornets were among 150 competitors from four nearby school districts, and successfully placed in every category.  In the 7th/8th grade individual event, Bianca Berry received First Place. In the 4th-6th grade individual event, Ben Hardesty received First Place, with a tie for second place by Grayson Balash and Michael Magijne.

In a nail-biting, over-time, multiple tie-breaker finish for the team competition, one group reigned supreme to bring home a 2nd place trophy: Norah Kwong, Naoka Obara, Sasha Andreska, Kaya Andreska, Alaina Jain, and Kiara Berry.

Congratulations to all the participants of the Math Team - it was a proud day to be a Hornet!

Fun with Geologic Time

6th grade science students had some fun final projects to end the Plate Tectonics Unit! We created edible plate boundaries to show how landforms are created.  We modeled different convection within the mantle to show the movement of not only plates, but mountains. We created a geologic timescale on a football field in honor of the Super Bowl (seen in picture). To end it all, we watched all of our weeks of data and analysis come together with a super cool movie called "The Story of Earth!"  It was a great end to a unit and to our trimester!

7th Grade Science - Junkyard Wars!

Over the past few weeks, our 7th grade engineers have been hard at work learning about electromagnets, circuits, switches, energy, and careers.  They utilized all that knowledge in designing, fabricating and testing out their own working electromagnets and participated in the annual ”Highlands Junkyard Wars!”  Students competed to see how much scrap metal they could pull out and weigh in a friendly competition.  Top scores were Chris Losavio with over 700 grams, Teo Libby and RJ Bigenwald with 580 grams and Julissa Marquez, Phoenix Carr, and Ariana Morales with 362 grams!

C-O-N-G-R-A-T-S!!

C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S to 7th grader Aidan B. who won the Highlands Middle School Spelling Bee this week! He will represent HMS and compete against other local winners at the West 40 Local Bee in Broadview on Tuesday, March 5th. Seventh grader Will P. was the runner up and will serve as our alternate. Well done, H-O-R-N-E-T-S!

LT Choral Festival

On Tuesday, January 16th, Highlands 6th-8th Grade Chorus students visited LT for a day of singing! They had the opportunity to learn alongside LT students and other local middle schools. The day culminated in an evening performance with pieces sung by LT and combined middle school ensembles.
