School in session January 16

Dear Highlands Community,

Highlands schools will be open for in-person attendance on Tuesday, January 16th. Please review these important details:

  • Please make every effort to drive your child to school or carpool with another family.
  • Students should not walk to school without being accompanied by an adult.
  • Students will be able to enter any door that is typically open during student arrival. Staff will be at the doors starting at 8:10.
  • Due to the increased number of students being dropped off and the process likely taking longer than usual, the student arrival window will be extended by 10 minutes. Students dropped off any time between 8:20-8:40 will not be considered tardy.
  • During dismissal, students will remain inside the school until their ride arrives. Students will not be allowed to walk home on their own. We know this will cause the dismissal process to take longer, so please be patient as we employ this strategy to ensure students are not outside longer than needed.
  • If your child is not in attendance due to the temperature, it will be considered an excused absence. Please be sure to call the office and report all absences.
  • Students brought their school-assigned computers and iPads home on Thursday. Please be sure they bring those devices and their musical instruments to school tomorrow.

We are looking forward to seeing our students and having a great day of learning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to respond to this email.

School Cancellation: January 12

Hello Highlands Community,

Unfortunately, tomorrow's heavy snowfall continues to be predicted to arrive in two main bursts, one in the hours leading up to student arrival, and one in the hours leading up to student dismissal. For that reason, school is canceled for tomorrow, January 12th.

There is no remote learning tomorrow, but there is an assignment for all students...get outside and enjoy a bunch of fresh snow. Future snow days this year will be remote learning days, so this is the time to make those memories.

Be safe,

John Munch, Superintendent

7th Grade Science - Electricity and Circuits

This week our young engineers began their study of electricity and circuits.  We learned all the parts of a simple circuit and practiced constructing switches and how to use wire cutters.  This is in preparation of our upcoming labs - homemade flashlights and our junkyard wars with electromagnets!  See some of the results below of our lights shining!  Don’t forget to go out on a clear night this month and see the “Gimined Meteor Showers”!

7th Grade Science - Magnetic Fields

This week in 7th grade Science, our young scientists are beginning trimester 2 by switching gears from chemistry to electricity/magnetism.  Students studied how magnets are created, how repulsion and attraction occurs, and learned how useful they are in various types of applications including roller coasters!  Our young engineers completed a lab using iron filings to plot out and sketch the magnetic fields with their new partners…check out the results below!
