Dear Highlands Families,

In connection with our novel study of the book Refugee, our Highlands Middle School 6th grade students are organizing a collection of items needed by a refugee family that is new to our area.

Please use the attached Sign Up Genius link to help by donating items to make their new apartment feel like home!

(Please donate new items only.)

Dear Highlands families,

After reading the novel Refugee by Alan Gratz, the 6th grade class has decided to complete a service project to help extend and deepen their understanding and connection of the current refugee crisis. We are partnering with an organization that supports refugees during the transition to their new home in the United States. Our school will be paired with a refugee family who will be moving to our surrounding area shortly. To help this family establish their new lives, we will be creating a Welcome to America! Pack for them. In this pack, we will donate products that are essential when moving into a new apartment. Often, refugees arrive in America with nothing more than a backpack with a few essential items. This Welcome to America! Pack is crucial for these families who are starting their lives over in an unfamiliar country.

To donate, we are asking that you use the Sign Up Genius link (posted on Schoology and on the school website), which is set up like a registry. When you purchase an item, please use the link to sign up for the item. This will help us stay organized and ensure that all items are being purchased. Also, please check the registry before making a purchase. We ask that all items are NEW.  Some items are more costly than others, so an option might be to pair up with another family to split the cost of the purchase.  Amazon, Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, and The Dollar Tree are all great places to purchase these items.

Please make all purchases gender neutral. We don’t know the family yet and would like items such as bedding, towels, etc. to be used by all members of the family.

Please have your student bring purchased items to Ms. O’Brien or Ms. Rankovich.

We will accept donations until December 10th.   If you are willing, we’d be grateful if you would also share this link with family, friends, coworkers, church groups, etc.

Thank you for your support and for making this project successful and meaningful for our students!

Sincerely,

Ms. Rankovich, Ms. O’Brien, and the 6th grade class
