Middle School: Sixth Grade Service Project UPDATE!
Published by Miss O Brien on Dec 13, 2018

Thank you SO much for the generous response to our request for donations to set up an apartment for a refugee family as they make their new home in Chicago! This project has been a truly moving and eye-opening experience for us all (both students and teachers alike), and we can’t thank the Highlands community enough for the support!

We delivered all the donated supplies today, and we also had the opportunity to meet the recipients: a Rohingya family of three: a mom, a dad, and a 6-year-old boy.  They arrived in Chicago this morning on an international flight from Malaysia, where they had been living in a refugee camp. It turns out that they were joining four siblings who settled here in Chicago two years ago.  The family we supported included the last sibling to make it to America with his wife and son.  They were all so excited to finally be reunited, and they were very grateful for your generous gifts and the heartfelt notes of welcome from our students.

This project has been a truly moving and eye-opening experience for us all (both students and teachers alike), and we can’t thank the Highlands community enough for the support!

Sincerely, Ms. Jean O’Brien and Ms. Danielle Rankovich
