Student Support Services

Message from the Director

Welcome to the LaGrange Highlands School Student Service Page. In collaboration with the LaGrange Area Department of Special Education, Highlands provides a varied continuum of student supports pre-k through 8th grade designed to allowing each child to reach his/her potential. Our staff consists of highly qualified professionals including resource teachers, academic intervention specialists, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and school nurses. Additionally, our partnership with the LaGrange Area Department of Special Education provides access to additional student supports and programming such as specialized early childhood evaluation, assistive technology, autism consultation and programming, and behavioral consultation and programming. It is our goal to provide an environment that is safe, nurturing, and responsive to the needs of each family and child. We invite parent partnership and foster community collaboration.

We are enthusiastic about what the 2019-2020 school year holds for Highlands School and we look forward to working together to help all students achieve their potential.

Student Support Roles & Providers

School Psychologists

School Psychologists help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents and other professionals to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school and the community for all students. School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education, emphasizing mental health and educational interventions, child development, learning, behavior, motivation, curriculum, instruction, assessment, consultation and school law.

School Nurses

School Nurses serve to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the school nurse provides health care to students, performs vision and hearing screenings, and works with school administration in the maintenance of a safe, healthy school setting.

School Social Workers

School Social Workers are a vital part of the educational team, working together with educational administrators, teachers, counselors, psychologists, nurses, speech and language pathologists and other staff. Their unique graduate level training in social work enables them to understand and interpret the influences of the school, home and community on children. School Social Workers identify factors that can make school a more successful experience for students.

Speech-Language Pathologists

Speech-Language Pathologists play an important role in education. SLPs may serve students directly or work with educators and families to address communication and language needs. Speech-Language Pathologists provide pre-referral consultations and are involved in various initiatives including RtI, speech-language screenings and provide interventions appropriate to the age and learning needs of the individual student.

Resource Teachers

The Resource Teacher is a vital member of the educational team. Resource teachers support students through both consultive and direct supports as indicated on the IEP. Resource teachers also team closely with their general education colleagues in coordination of services as well as in the creation of learning environments and instructional design developed to meet the needs of all learners.

Occupational Therapists

Occupational Therapists provide occupational therapeutic intervention which may include remediation of performance abilities that are limited due to impairment in biological, physiological, psychological or neurological processes. Occupational therapists also collaborate with classroom teams regarding the adaptation of tasks, the environment, and/or the teaching of compensatory techniques in order to enhance school performance.

Physical Therapists

Physical Therapists provide therapeutic support to students by enhancing school mobility and safe participation in educational activities, increasing strength, accuracy and speed, facilitating access to and mobility within school by assessing and changing the environment, and promoting competency and safety of educational staff in body mechanics, handling techniques, motor skills and classroom adaptations.
