4th Grade and Kindergarten Buddies

We truly enjoy our kindergarten buddy times in 4th Grade! We have done so many fun and amazing activities with our buddy this past month.  Last week the 4th graders in 4SZ helped their buddy solve math problems to crack the code in their SNOWMAN ESCAPE ROOM! The kids all had so much fun in solving clues in our classrooms and in the hallway to try and FREE Freezie the Snowman before he melted!

Congrats to our 8th Grade Boys' Basketball Team!

A big congratulations to our 8th grade boys' basketball team.  The boys beat McClure last night in the championship game of the annual Hodgkins Tournament to end their perfect season.  They won 49-35 and brought home their second third trophy of the season.  We cannot wait to add this team to our list of champions here at Highlands!

Thank you to the students, staff, and parents that supported our teams this season.  A special thank you to our cheerleaders for their support and spirit throughout the season.

7th Grade Science - Soldering and Electricity

This week in 7th grade Science, our young engineers were studying electricity and circuits to complement our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) unit.  We examined various careers, such as electrical engineering and electronics, how to calculate amps, volts, and ohms, and even learned the art of soldering.  Check out the pics below of our young engineers in action!

Boys' Basketball Hodgkins Tournament

Our boys' basketball teams participated in the Hodgkins Basketball Tournament this weekend.

7th grade finished in 3rd overall after two well-played and hard-fought games.  A huge thank you to Mac McCarthy and Mr. Stetson Steele for stepping in and stepping up to support the team, and helping them to end their season on a high note.

Our 8th graders also played two games - successfully beating both Westchester and Gurrie to land them in the Championship round.  The Championship game is scheduled for this Wednesday evening, 1/18 at 7:30 pm at LT North in the Fieldhouse.

Come out and support our Hornets!

It has been a great season overall ~ our players have represented us well ~ and we could not be more proud!  Go Hornets!

Our Future Looks Bright!

Buddy time is a favorite time for kindergartners. We read, play games, do writing activities and lots of art activities. The relationships have really blossomed since the beginning of the year! This week the kindergarteners in Mrs. Lesniak's class took some time to reflect on all the things they are looking forward to in 2023. Their 4th grade buddies from Mrs. Alsteen's class helped them create a cool craft to illustrate their visions for the year. Their future really does look bright!

ECE studies clothes

ECE is studying clothes. We are also working with different fabrics. These boys are exploring fabric by making curtains for their fort!

3rd Grade Light Experiment

The 3rd Graders started their new Amplify unit, "Light and Sound".  They had fun doing an experiment to see what types of objects light travels through.  First, they made predictions and then in small groups they took turns using a flashlight to see if light travels through aluminum foil, plastic wrap, card board and wax paper.  They were excited to see that many of their predictions were accurate!

2nd Grade Westward Expansion

In 2nd grade we learned about the Westward expansion that took place across the United States in the 1800's. At the end of the unit we created homemade "quilts" to display all of the information we learned! The quilts turned out so well and the kids were so proud of their creations.
